Loose Threads: Canada to SoCal

In today's edition of Loose Threads, I've got jersey news, ice painting news, and some other stuff. I always know to start with the jersey news and for now that means Calgary.

Flames: Retro Edge Jersey Revealed

Flames retro Edge jerseyAn Icethetics reader sent in a photo of the Calgary Flames vintage sweater in its new Reebok Edge cut.

Last season, the Flames re-introduced their original threads as an alternate uniform as part of their 30th anniversary celebration. Then in March the team announced that the classic sweater would be back for at least another season, but as a Reebok Edge jersey. Last season's version was made out of the standard pre-Edge jersey material.

The design remains mostly the same but for an alteration in the collar. The Flames have said this jersey will be worn up to 15 times this season. Last year, it saw action in only five games. Thanks to Mitchell for sending in this photo.

Maple Leafs: Center Line Gets Patriotic

Leafs paint new patriotic center lineThe Toronto Maple Leafs have overhauled their center ice design at the Air Canada Centre.

A string of Canadian flags now forms the center red line on their rink. But there's a twist. The leaf you find within those little white boxes that run the 85 feet from dasher to dasher is not quite what you'd find on the flag. It's actually the Maple Leafs' logo painted red. Not ground-breaking, but pretty cool.

Close-up of Leafs' new red lineHere's a close up. But if these photos aren't enough for you, the Leafs have you covered. There's an entire photo gallery on the website that shows the process of painting the logos before the ice goes down. Thanks to Brad for that.

Also, I haven't yet mentioned it on the site, but I did link to it on Twitter last week. We recently got a look at the the Leafs' new home sweater in action at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase. Click here to see it.

Kings: Look Out for Legends Night

Kings to celebrate Legends NightFinally, we have some new details on what the Los Angeles Kings are calling Legends Night this season.

Icethetics reader Curtis S. recently received his season ticket package and had some information to share. He says the Kings have branded several games as Legends Night.

Not sure what that means but the games are denoted by an emblem that features the Kings' retro logo. The team will be wearing a retro sweater this season, so this is probably indicative of that.

We already know the Kings will relaunch the classic threads on Oct. 9 against the Canucks. Curtis tells me that other Legends Nights include Jan. 15 vs Edmonton, Feb. 24 vs Minnesota and Mar. 19 vs Anaheim.

Too bad those games are all at home. What a sight it would be to see the Kings and Oilers both in their brightly-colored retro sweaters — no red, black or navy blue to be found.

By the way, the Kings are holding Hockey Fest '10 this Saturday. They haven't said anything about unveiling their retro jersey at this event, but it would be a good time, so I'll keep an eye on it.

The new Flames jersey is actually now on sale across Canada, the Flames are not doing an official launch as it is basically the same jersey as last year.

I'm not going to the Kings Hockey Fest this year (work), but I haven't heard anything about unveiling a jersey. It's basically gonna be a Q&A with Lombardi, and past Kings like McSorley, Robitaille, and Fox, and I think a rookie camp/scrimmage thing, also.

Either way, can't wait to see the retro unis come back!

It looks like the Flames had to blow out some of the pre-edge inventory before they could resell this to the fans. Feel sorry for the fans that bought the old inventory last year not knowing that the team would make it obsolete the next. Always a classy organization over there in Calgary. Not cheap at all.

In the earlier post regarding the Flames retro:
"Also, Olli Jokinen won't be wearing it, it's probably safe to say."

...If only that were true..

It looks like the Flames jersey is a bit different to account for the Edge cut too. The bottom hem has some additional red fabric beneath the stripes. The originals (and last season's) did not.

Not that takes anything away from it though! Most excited I've been for a Flames jersey since 2003-04!

Silly Toronto, thinking they are Canada's team. lol

It would be really nice of the Ducks wear their white Mighty Ducks jerseys against the Kings and their retro jerseys for a real retro night.

I noticed the red at the bottom of the flames jersey as well. A little pointless, but certainly doesn't take away from it. It almost makes the design stay true to the original since it won't have the curved hem on the edge design - keeps the yellow stripe straight.

Might need me an Iggy one for my first non-Bruins jersey in years

I second what MATT said.

Both the Flames and Kings need to go to these jerseys full-time. Time to leave the black-infested stuff in the 90s where it belongs.

Can someone explain the Reebok logic for the tapered bottom hem on the Edge sweaters? It just looks SILLY. Why?

Wow the haters can even find something wrong with the red line. The RED LINE! If Toronto sucks so much and is such a pathetic team, why make fun of them. The fact is, people only hate on a person when either a) they are jealous of them (ie. Toronto being the biggest hockey market in the WORLD), or b) They feel they should be in the spotlight. The fact is, the only reason Toronto is in the spotlight is because people like you keep talking about the leafs. If a kid comes in last place in a race, all the other kids aren't going to make fun of him. But for some reason, you guys do this to the leafs. And where were you when the leafs made the playoffs 6 consecutive season up until 2004, making the conference finals twice? You were nowhere to be seen because your team was either not in the playoffs, or filing for bankruptcy protection. Thank the leafs for the money they loaned you. It's true, look it up.

@ Matt & Brad.

If you had taken the time to look, you would have realized that the Leafs have painted this new red-line to support our troops...Is it wrong of them to be patriotic? I don't think so.

I love the new red-line personally.

Sep 10 · 4:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Ok calm down Andrew....
Toronto thinks its the capital of the hockey world, thats fine, you can think that. But who cares. Montreal has a much richer history, imo.

Personnally i like it too, hate the leafs, but I think that redline looks wicked cool its a great idea, putting in that little extra touch gives it character and looks good, and if its in support of Canadian troops, even better.
After seeing other teams in the league do their redlines with something cool i think every team should do it.
But i still second what matt says... lol.

@ Andrew: THANK YOU!!!

@Steve: Agreed

It's amazing how everything comes full circle, most teams try out new designs then years later: "You know what, it was fine the way it was". I really like Calgary's retro jersey. I remember seeing that jersey in the early 90's at Sabres and Leafs games and the bright red always looked very imposing.

I also like the red line for the ACC, looks good!

Sep 10 · 8:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAaron12

@ Brad

Honestly Toronto isnt pretentious at all. This is just some fake idea that people spread around. If anything, leafs fans are just really defensive. the leafs are always being hated on, but you'll never see a leafs fan hating on another team.

Sep 11 · 12:30 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

"The leafs are always being hated on, but you'll never see a leafs fan hating on another team." Well that's a naive ... And completely inaccurate statement.
Dont take "Silly Toronto, thinking they are Canada's team. lol" so seriously... its just simple banter.
Ppl have been saying "Toronto thinks its the centre of Canada" for years, not just in a hockey sense.
Anyway, the red line looks good!!! Great idea!
Love the flames jerseys too, im glad they brought those back, i plan on buying one, i was born the day lanny mc lifted the cup in those beauties!

I'm curious if every NHL barn will have something painted in the red line this season, as the Sabres now have stars along their red line in the exact same manner as the Leafs have maple leaves.
