Canuck logo of the birthing whale is horrid. If the Canadiens don't win this there is something wrong. Bruins winning would not be a shocker either.

Mar 17 · 6:00 PM PDT | Unregistered Commentersaranda

I am a Canuck fan, but aside from some people's silly presumptions I choose their logo over the Blues because... I think it's a better logo! I think the orca is a good symbol for a west-coast team to use, and I also like the native influence in it. (I preferred the original coloring it once had but it still looks very good.) I also like the "C" formed by the whale breaking through the water/ice.

The Blues logo is also a good logo, and it is simpler; but between the two it's not as sharp.

Mar 18 · 8:46 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDon

Ok, now Don, would you like to share where in that logo it represents "Canucks"? Yeah, absolutely nowhere. The logo looks good, but is irrelevant when their name isn't the "Orcas".

Mar 18 · 8:50 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterLeaferslp

am i the only person who does not like the penguins logo? it is a penguin playing hockey and it looks really stupid to me. I am a ducks fan and probably shouldn't talk because i liked the old mighty ducks logo (hate the new one, though) but the penguins logo should definately not be beating the senators one.

Mar 18 · 9:07 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChris P

@Leaferslp, why does it have to represent a "Canuck", please explain how a Roman Centurion represents a Senator, and how a spoked B represents "Bruins", what makes the CH "Canadiens" why is a flying musical note a "Blue" and not a "Metal" or a "Rock" since they have musical notes too...

Too many people in this poll are going to vote for their favorite team regardless of what the logo looks like, and too many people are going to vote for an original six team for the "History". These tournaments will always fail as they will always be based on the "history" and team-bias as opposed to the esthetical values of the logo itself.

Mar 18 · 9:30 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIan K

Hey Ian, I appreciate everything you said about how logos don't necessarily have to be a literal representation of their team names to be good. But what makes a "good" logo exactly?

What I have to say here really goes out to everyone who's been complaining about the way the results are turning out.

Obviously, we're all biased in some way. It's the nature of art — which logos basically are. But the idea that a competition like this will "fail" because voters aren't using the same criteria you are (whatever that may be) rings rather false to me.

NHL logos don't exist in a vacuum and as such there is no way for anyone to vote with a strictly objective eye — not that that's even possible when considering artwork. There are limitless reasons as to why someone votes for one logo over another. It could be as simple as the color scheme or as complex as the aesthetics. It could even just be the history and tradition or lack thereof. Some people will vote just because it's their favorite team and some won't.

Everyone brings their own experiences and sense of style to the table when voting here. To dismiss the whole thing because you don't think enough people are using the same voting criteria as you is the real fallacy. If there was a true and definitive way to quantify what the "best" logo is, no one would bother voting.

There's no real point to this anyway. In the end, it's just a fun opportunity to see how Icethetics readers rate hockey logos, regardless of the reason. So just enjoy it, even if you don't always agree with the majority. Who wants to go with the crowd anyway?

I encourage you to share your personal opinions by posting a comment. But try to avoid jumping down someone else's throat just because their opinions are different. It makes you look silly and it won't change anyone's mind.

@ Ian K

How does a Blue Note not represent Blues

I think you dont undersatnd that the Blues were named after a song and the genre named Blues.

Your statement about metal or rock makes no sense because no one ever mentioned it. St. Louis Blues were named after the song entitled "St.Louis Blues". St. Louis is very well known for being a hub for great blues musicians and a blue note symbolizes it very well.

If you are wanting to get fancy about this Ill just make a new team in Mexico and make their logo the Mona Lisa and maybe your thirst for esthetic perfection will be satisfied. This is a logo competition and of course theres going to be bias. Your whining doesnt change it.

Mar 18 · 2:17 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJon

well said Jon, well said. the bluenote is a perfect representation of both Saint Louis, and of the Blues

Mar 18 · 2:31 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff F

Re: Vancouver

I think the orca represent Vancouver very well. There are a lot of Orca in the waters of Vancouver and is a very symbolic animal of the First Nations people in and around the Vancouver area. I don't see too many penguins in Pits. or many saber tooth tigers in Nashiville, althought i guess there is some histoy there.

The stick-in-a-rink someone mention as ugly...come one...It's the best minimalist sports logo out there.
But the skate with the orange the Canucks had...that looks like someone vommitted all over a jersey. i'd say it's even worse than the V.

Mar 19 · 2:27 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeebezer

Why the hate against the Nucks original logo? Its a rink, the stick in there makes a "C". It's not the most clever, that's for sure, but its clean and neat and I personally think its a nice logo. You can see it clearly without have to be 2 feet from it to see what it is. I live in Atlanta - I went from the classic Flames logo to the horrendous mess we have now. I'd love a simple logo like the Canucks. The Orca looses me not because of the whale, but the monocromatic look bothers me. Go back to that logo with the green accents and you have a winner.

Let us remember WHY the Wings have that logo. In the early NHL each team had two sweaters EXCEPT Montreal. The Wings chose red to force the Habs to get a second set. The league already had rules in place so that the Canadiens already got all the francophone stars, thus giving them the best team almost every year. This was a stab at them to say the rules were the same for all. For that alone, great logo.

Chicago - classic. Best in sports. Yeah great Colorado...you have an "A" shaped like a mountain and the snow falling off is shaped like a "C". Too literall and too busy.

San Jose - teal was out 10 years ago. Adding orange even made it worse. Good concept that needs updating.

Flaming C is great. I'd just change the "C" from black to white, then trim in black then yellow.

Atlanta, Nashville, San Jose, Ottawa - simplify, simplify simplify. Dont go too far however - then you get the Leafs, and that;s toooooo boring.

Boston, New York, Montreal, New Jersey, Minnesota - don't change a thing.

Phoenix needs to fix the prespective...eyes looking to its left, but you can see the inside of the left cheek...mouth faces right. Mior nit-picking, I know....but it bugs me.

Mar 19 · 5:48 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterglovesave29

This whole thing about voting for your favourite team sounds ridiculous. Obviously it depends who your favourite team is, but why not just be honest? Its not like the team that wins this wins the Stanley Cup. Every time the Leafs place well in tings such as the Hockey News logo tournament, I can't believe it. Even our jersey is horribly boring.

Mar 19 · 11:48 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterLeaferslp

How the f*** did the Canucks catch up so much

Mar 19 · 12:05 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Their fans are dedicated, man.

Mar 19 · 12:15 PM PDT | Registered CommenterChris

@TK Lightning isn't a just singular, it's a plural, too.
What else would be the plural form? Lightnings?
I actually like that name.

Mar 19 · 2:10 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterlightning25

I wish that Buffalo would realize that their team is "The Sabres", and not "The Buffalos"

Mar 19 · 2:44 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTeflon Billy

A Canuck fan here - the reason they caught up is because canucks.com publicized this contest.

As for me I voted Blues. Orcas have nothing to do with the concept of "Canuck". Change the name to Vancouver Killer Whales and I am voting for it every time!

Until they ditch the birthing whale for good ole Johnny Canuck (he's on their shoulders right now) - Toque, plaid shirt, jeans and skates! I am voting against them. When Johnny Canuck is front and center, they get my vote.

Mar 19 · 3:02 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterShane

IMO, Predators win over the Sharks logo. Surprisingly, many undoubtly voted the other way.
Of course the Canucks logo will win over the Blues. Its the Canucks. 'Nuff said.

Mar 19 · 3:12 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKevin C.

Adding to my post, people saying the Canucks logo doesn't have anything to do with Canucks I disagree.
First off, the Orca is in the shape of a C. C for Canucks, but I'm sure everyone got that.

Second of all, Orca's are the most dominant ocean mammal in the world. Basically the most fierce predator. That basically symbolizes the Canucks. Diehard fans would agree, haters can leave.

Just my two cents.

Mar 19 · 3:16 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKevin C.

It seems like the Canucks are getting a hundred votes an hour. Their logo is horrid compared to the Blues which makes me think that someone is rigging the polls.

Mar 19 · 4:23 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Kevin C. what does "Its the Canucks. 'Nuff said." even mean

Mar 19 · 4:25 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I honestly don't understand why everyone is picking on the Canucks logo! If you don't already know this, Canuck is another term for a Canadian, and unless you put a picture of a person all decked out in Canadian gear, you will not have a proper representation of a Canuck!
We're a west coast team with beautiful scenery and an ocean right beside us with these amazing Orcas, the colours of the jersey and the orca symbolize what makes Vancouver great, and in this way, the logo works, symbolically, so stop knocking it!
The Blues logo is fine and all but its just not a kick butt whale, lol yes I am biased but honestly I love our Orca logo and if we do lose the licensing for it after 2011 I'll be very sad to see it go!
As for integrity of this contest, fans will obviously vote for their teams, its inevitable but when choosing between teams they don't have a vested interest in I'm sure they'll choose the best looking logo, that's what I'm doing!
Wow, sorry this is long but I was just getting a tad bit annoyed with all the Orca bashing!

Mar 19 · 5:25 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKatie

ps - I realize some people will argue the Johnny Canuck logo represents what a Canuck is better but I think it looks like a total, goofy little cartoon and I personally don't like it much!

Mar 19 · 5:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Still wondering how the Blues get about 2 votes to the Canucks 100 each hour

Mar 19 · 5:45 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Katie say shes tired of the orca bashing but it looks like the Canucks management has been trying to bash the teams appearance ever since 1970

Mar 19 · 5:48 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterFC14

LOL @ this poll. Who ever has the largest online fan base is going to win. I think the Vancouver Canucks forum has the highest web traffic of all NHL sites. Good luck trying to conduct a fair poll!

Mar 19 · 6:12 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSG

I already was afraid, that this contest just determines which teams have the bigger fanbase... And now the outcome of the blues-vs-canuchs poll really shows the differences...

Mar 19 · 7:21 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNelloz

Go Canucks!

Mar 19 · 7:24 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNooj

So it seems that Jon may have been the only one to read my post that told Canucks supporters that the Blues logo is a musical note and blue because they are named after the famous blues tune, "The St. Louis Blues". Plus you'll not I pointed out that many other teams get it right, such as San Jose and Nashville. May i re-iterate that Phoenix too is spot on, they're the Coyotes, and their logo is a howling coyote. The team in Vancouver is named the Canucks. since its inseption, the club has been represented by a stick in a rink in the shape of a C, a large V, the infamous spghetti skate and an orca. Now tell me, in all honesty, were any one them actually good? And don't defend your team by throwing other teams like the Rangers under the bus. They were originally owned by a man by the name of Tex Rickard, and before coming up with a name, a local newspaper dubbed the team "Tex's Rangers". The fun play on words became the name of the team, and from there, they put the name on a badge/shield which if I'm not mistaken, rangers will often wear on their uniform.

That is just one example of a team getting it right. Whether you find it boring or not, it is just simply too perfect for such a team. Shaping your logo after the name or city doesn't make it work, with the small exceptions. The Flames? Whether they were in Atlanta or now Calgary, at least the team nickname was represented by the flames coming out of the letter. With Vancouver, you have an orca, busting out of ice conveniently in a C, however, it's not a canuck. In the end, it is just a shameless branding for the Orca Bay Co. to stamp their brand on the hockey team. If there is one thing many followers of this site agree on, it is not kosher to pur a corporate logo on an NHL uniform. Served!

Mar 19 · 9:26 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenteriain

The Canucks killer whale logo is VERY appropriate to the city of Vancouver. Take any BC Ferry from Horseshoe Bay or Tswassen (greater Vancouver ferry terminals for those who don't know), and you have a good chance to see a pod of killer whales. Greater Vancouver also has a lot of racoons, coyotes, ravens, gulls and bald eagles, but the killer whale... just a little cooler looking when done in the style of Haida art.

Mar 19 · 9:27 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChris Brown

Love the format. Canucks could go far due to bias though.

Mar 20 · 2:38 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKrazyKazakhs

The Canucks fans who've made the late push have not been voting for any of the other polls.

THe average at this point of the other 11 polls is about 4721, with 4790 and 4594 being the highest and lowest totals. The Blues-Canucks poll, though, has surged to 5668, nearly 1000 votes above average.

Mar 20 · 7:46 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

I starting to like how everyone is agreeing and saying the Blues-Canucks poll is being rigged by a bigger fan-base

Mar 20 · 8:38 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

You know, with what everybody's saying about Canucks fans swarming the polls, I think you should make it so that anybody who votes HAS to vote on ALL the other polls also. It might not fix the "problem", but it might keep people from coming just to vote for the Canucks.

Either that, or only allow one vote per voting period, rather than once per day.

A couple things I think should be taken into consideration.

Mar 20 · 10:01 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKevin Y

Its nice to see the loyalty Caanucks fans have. The "Orca" which supposedly represents Vancouver will win that match although the majoirty of the people here agree that the bluenote is the superior logo,

This is what it comes down to:
Your team name is Canucks
Your logo is an orca. If your name had been "Orcas" it would have fit.
Your name is Canuck hence the logo does not fit the name. Heck, make your name the Sea Mammals and itd work.
The Orca forming a "C" is trivial. You could squint really hard and say the bluenote forms an S.L.

All in all I think the Bruins should win this. I say this because they're the "B"oston "B"ruins and the "B" logo is just classic along with the color scheme. That logo, along with Montreal's, has too much nostalgia in the league to lose this competition.

Im hoping that the Vancouver Sea Mammals are up against an Original 6 next.

Mar 20 · 10:21 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJon

The Canucks logo isn't that bad. Do you guys even know what Canuck mean? In order to have a good logo it doesn't need to be concrete adaption of the team name. I'm not a big fan of the Orca in representing vancouver, but the logo its self isn't bad at all. I think the Canucks will be adopting the third jersey as next years main. Modern stick and rink logo, johnny canucks on the shoulder. Alternate- Johnny Canuck crest, and stick and rink on shoulder.

Mar 20 · 11:20 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSG

In regards to the argument that the team with the larger fanbase will win, look at the NJD vs the Leafs, it's obvious who has the larger fanbase but that's not the team winning. So one can only assume that some people are actually voting on the look of the logo, not just their favorite team. And I'm a Penguins fans but I did also vote on all the other logos too.

One more note: everyone seems to be picking on the fact the Orca doesn't represent a Canuck but in all the Canucks fans' posts they explain just why they use that image, please read before you all complain about the exact same issue. Also, the point of the poll is purely aesthetic! Which logo LOOKS better, not which one best represents its name

Mar 20 · 4:02 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChristina S,

This may not work as well as the current format but after seeing the Blues-Canucks poll I'm wondering if people should only get one vote per poll per week

Mar 20 · 4:30 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Christina, we understand the waters around Vancouver are ripe with sea creatures that are relative to the logo on the Canucks uniform. Are they called the Shamu's, the K Whales, the Orcas? No, they are not. Plus it's by far the ugliest primary mark. It is dated, devoid of color and comical. It was bred during that creative era of the 90's that thought carotoonish animals were fierce. The Canucks have 1 great logo in their history. The Jonny Canuck logo, that is regretably forced onto the shoulders of an equally uninspired 3rd jersey.

Mar 20 · 7:31 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenteriain

Or how about Chris reserves veto power over a vote if it's flat out obvious that it's being rigged?

Also, I'm sorry guys, but the Red Wings logo really is crap. It works because it's so entrenched, but it doesn't stand on it's own merits. Same with the pens logo. The 'pigeon' was much, much closer to a penguin anatomically, was much cleaner of a design, and was much more balanced. Let's at least try to separate design from association with it.

Mar 20 · 10:48 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff P

Tell me this, how does a spoked B represent a bruin?

Mar 21 · 12:54 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterspud

@ IAIN

The Canucks logo is an outdated 90's logo? Look at the Penguins please, that's outdated.

Mar 21 · 12:57 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterspud

Johnny Canuck may have been a cartoon character Katie, but come on, he is why we are named the Canucks. I say we go with a JC concept (V, skating or new one) but keep Fin as our mascot. I do not want a lumberjack, an orca in a mascot position would be just fine.

Mar 21 · 9:47 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEvan

I don't see how people can think the Canucks logo looks even remotely good so it clearly comes down to fan base. If the Blues had star players like Luongo and the Sedins than the Blues would be winning 90%-10% right about now

Mar 21 · 9:59 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSteve

I have a lot of native american friends and they are not at all offended by any of these "politically incorrect" sports logos. In fact all the natives ii know love the logos of the Indians, Braves, and Blackhawks (but mostly the Cleveland Indians) because they find them amusing. In the end it's a bunch of subconscious white people that are the ones finding these logos offensive when they have absolutely nothing to do with their actual race in the first place

Mar 21 · 11:13 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTheKleenexBox

Jeff P - I've been a Pens fan since the '79/'80 season. I HATE the Howard Baldwin Bankruptcy PIGEON LOGO. I "QUIT" buying Pens merchandise when Baldwin came out with that crap. It wasn't until Mario brought back the Skating Penguin that I started to buy Pens merchandise again. I for one, am glad that the PIGEON logo is dead!

Mar 21 · 12:21 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenter91Pens92

the blackhawks logo is nice, but it really is nothing special or highly complex (e.g. wild)

Mar 21 · 3:29 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterheadsigh

@SPUD I'm not saying the Pens one isn't, I voted for the Senators. However, it's at least a Penguin, and it has been since the first jersey the franchise put on. Even though it's not the best logo, it's still better than the orca. An uneducated casual hockey fan will see that logo and be able to identify them as the Penguins. Could you say the same for the Canucks? Even if they didn't know the name of the club and saw their unis, they would only know they're from Vancouver thanks to the garish arched title of the city pasted onto them. It could maybe pass as a secondary mark, but not a primary. To be fair, the Canucks aren't the only team where the primary should be on the shoulder. Washington for instance, has a fantastic secondary mark that should be boldly on the front of the jersey. The Ducks should find themselves a better logo and ditch the wordmark that is scary bad. Let's not even get started on the Sabres. In the end, there are far to many Canucks fans voting for the logo because it's their team, rather than the small percentage who actually find it an attractive logo.

Mar 21 · 4:28 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenteriain

why are ppl saying the canucks should go back to the "V" concept or the skate??? they bot hare widely known as the ugliest jerseys in sports history. and for those of you that say "simpler logos" are better such as the stick-in-rink canucks concept, why are the leafs losing? is that not as simple as it gets? what better way to represent a "maple leaf" than putting a maple leaf. ppl are just jealous cause hockey lives or dies based on canadians ie. the maple leafs.

Mar 21 · 6:15 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterleafsfan

I would be happy to see the penguins in yellow rather than gold. Although Bruins fans might start a riot :)

Mar 21 · 7:23 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenteroconn96

91Pens92, does that have to do with the logo itself of the playoff elimination by the islanders?
