0152: Ahoy, Penguins! Arrrgh!

Maybe I should've saved this concept for Talk Like a Pirate Day, but that's still a couple of months down the road. Nick Burton has an interesting jersey offering for the Pittsburgh Penguins based on their Steel City NHL predecessor, the Pirates. This isn't the first concept we've seen from that era of the NHL in Pennsylvania...

You may recall a number of Quakers-inspired Flyers jerseys that started appearing when it was announced Philadelphia would host its first Winter Classic last year. This one by Jack Gambro was one of them. I'm reposting it here because I think it makes a good companion for the Penguins/Pirates look above. What do you guys think? Would these make for a great-looking game or what?

0132: The Philangeles FlyKings

Inspired by Ross Taylor's series of brand-blended concepts, Ty Hill set out to merge a couple of 1967 expansion clubs. Is this what would happen if the Philadelphia Flyers and Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings mated? I don't know but it's definitely a Freak Out Friday.

0105: Black for the Winter Classic

I'm not saying the Philadelphia Flyers should take part in their third Winter Classic in the near future, but if the time comes, this would be an excellent uniform option! Mason Hesse put together this design that, while completely new, feels very much like a throwback. What do you think? Is this one case where black might actually work?

0091: 45 Years of the Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers' 45th anniversary is around the corner and the subject of this half of the Retro Weekend. Justin Cox has put together a couple of logos and a jersey. Frankly, it's the best Liberty Bell-inspired logo I've seen yet.

0063: Feelin' Retro in Philly

It's another Winter Classic Weekend. Matt Marczel has put together a nice retro-inspired sweater for the Philadelphia Flyers. If you ask me, the only drawback is the Jets-style striping.

0056: Philly Classic Mulligan

Since we missed out on a Ross Taylor concept this week for a special Friday the 13th posting, I'm giving the first half of this Winter Classic Weekend to Ross. Some time ago, he put together a couple of jerseys for the 2012 Winter Classic between the Flyers and Rangers. An improvement over what we actually saw or not?

0022: A Cracked Bell in the Elements

Like I said yesterday, it feels like we need a break from the Wings and Leafs this Winter Classic Weekend. So I'm digging deep into my inbox. This Philadelphia Flyers concept from Erik Flemming was emailed to me way back in November. The Liberty Bell has long been used by concept artists as a secondary emblem for the Flyers. Here, Erik explains his design choices:

Key design features:

  • Liberty Bell crest inspired by print image from 1966 contest to name the team
  • Three thin black stripes are borrowed from Philadelphia Quakers sweater
  • Two vintage white stripes represent the Philadelphia Flyers two Stanley Cup championships
  • Fonts are current uniform fonts which have remained largely unchanged since 1967-68 (numbers) and 1972-73 (names)
  • Shoulder design to be added (either current winged P logo or 45th anniversary logo)
