    Pirates Getting Starred And Striped

This is one of those times where I just have to laugh at the AHL. This weekend, the Portland Pirates will commemmorate Veterans' Day by wearing a new Stars & Stripes jersey. And you have to see it to believe it.

There really are no words for this. I'm dying to see pictures when they actually wear it in a game on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Phantoms. I will definitely post photos here at Icethetics when they're available.

For more information on this, check out the Pirates' web site.

there has to be better ways to do this...like, for instance, the rarely seen 1976 USA olympic jerseys.

but i guess it's for a good cause, and it's less harmful to the image of the flag than flag-man-thongs...so i can handle it, as long as it stays a special occasion thing.

otherwise, are TWO reebok logos really necessary on the back? Really?

I thought that the Amerk's had the whole American flag themed jersey market cornered?

    Nov 6 . 2:00 PM | Unregistered Commenterfobj3000

OK but im sure the Milwaukee Admirals will put together some stupid jerseys like they do every year.

    Nov 6 . 2:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterKuyperKA06

    Wow, that pretty awful...

    Nov 6 . 2:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterBrian

I think they are cool. They are far from permanent, why not change it up for a game for a good cause.

    Nov 6 . 2:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohn

is the jersey on there website supposed to not match at all?? first off the stars are on the right shoulder on the front then the left shoulder on the back...??? and the number doesnt match....not even close hahaha

shame on the pirates staff for not noticing these little things, cause other people do and think your idiots, not to mention you actually want to wear these on the ice.....awful just awful

One of the few moments where I'm embarrassed to be from Maine. We join up with the Sabres and suddenly we're all about ridiculous jerseys?

    Nov 6 . 3:12 PM | Unregistered Commentertoaster

It interesting that folks do stuff like this to honor the country, while that's good, U.S. Code says that "the flag should never be used as wearing apparel" (United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1 — The Flag, Section 8d).

The intent in great, but in reality it is disrepecful to the flag.

Well, Buffalo's AHL affiliate is batting .500 in terms of "special" jerseys. The cancer awareness ones were good. These . . . . wow.

    God Bless America!

I can't imagine actually playing Hockey in one of those... I'll never understand the AHL's obsession with gimmick jerseys. And why is it so hard to make good ones? I'd bet 90% of this site could design a better American jersey...

I heard from someone that worked for the Sabres that the Pirates are going to do seven different jerseys this year. One of them is supposed to be a Sabres/Pirates jersey, which I was told looks pretty cool. Personally, if they are selling the jereys and making money for charity, all the power too them.

    Ow, my eyes

    Nov 6 . 6:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterIan

So glad I have to work that night.

    Nov 6 . 6:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterBlake

Well, lets look at this on the bright side... at least it will hurt the eyes of the opposing goaltender! Seriously though, at least the pirates are showing they are patriotic, even though the jersey may be laughable, it is a good way to commerate the people who have fought and died in past wars for the U.S. for Veteran's day.

    Nov 6 . 6:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterWingerdinger

No...just not. But congrats to them for taking notice of Veteran's Day. Nice tribute :)

Nov 6 . 6:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHE DUCK KNIGHT

Geoff Fox that means that you should not actually wear the flag. like larry flint turning it into a diaper. the actual jerseys are not made of the flag just in the likeness.

that withstanding those jerseys are FUGLY!!!

    U-G-L-Y-!-!

    Nov 6 . 7:51 PM | Unregistered Commenterb

I don't dislike the idea to commemorate our veterans. But somehow, this jersey doesn't scream America.. or Pirates. It looks like a soccer kit with all the stripes, to be honest.

    Nov 6 . 7:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

Something else: these jerseys are pretty bad, and if I had one, I'd burn it. But I can't!! It's against the law to burn an American flag. So we're all out of luck :(

    Nov 6 . 7:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

No disrespect to our new affiliate, but these are pretty bad. Our old AHL team (damn you, Donner) did them right:

    Of course, those weren't one-offs.

    Nov 6 . 8:24 PM | Unregistered Commentercarpandean

LOL! did someone just puke all over that jersey?

    Nov 6 . 8:30 PM | Unregistered Commentertheshawn

You would criticize a jersey with good meaning behind it, Chris. You also voted for Obama, so it doesn't surprise me that you have a problem with our country's flag on something. Maybe it's a noisy jersey, but when's the last time the weak 'BOLTS' honored our great country?

    Nov 6 . 9:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterIrate Reader

I don't think they're actually going to look that bad. The rendering sucks, but I like the concept.

    Nov 6 . 9:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterArenacale

    ok irate reader calm down....

people are just saying the jersey is ugly, no one is bashing what they are doing it for

i can think of alot better ways to honor your country that dont look soo awful

    Nov 6 . 9:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterJHero

almost as bad as the thrashers third jersey

    Nov 6 . 10:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterConnor

Honestly, the AHL bastardizes our national sport of hockey and I want them to please refrain from doing it anymore. Just go back to baseball, bastardize that some more, no one will care. At least no one in Canada will.

    Nov 6 . 10:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterTremblay

the Amerks Flag jersey was better

    Nov 7 . 1:55 AM | Unregistered CommenterWozniak

Good lord. I kinda wish I wasn't going out of state this weekend. I'd go to the game and take some pictures for you.

    Nov 7 . 2:01 AM | Unregistered CommentereRay

At least its for a good cause.

    Nov 8 . 10:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterFlorio

hmmm Rochester's jerseys were unique and actually really popular...ya think Portland is trying to relate and trying to gain fans after becoming Buffalo's AHL affiliate this year (no matter how tacky those may look)?

    Nov 9 . 2:48 AM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

I just don't get it, if this was the Amerks this post wouldn't have been created
